Intel to start shipping new version of support chip in mid-Feb

New York: Intel will start shipping the new version of a support chip in mid-February, whose shipment was stopped recently due to some design flaw.

The chip set is used in personal computers that have the latest second generation Intel core processors, code-named Sandy Bridge.

The company late last month disclosed that it found a "design issue" with support chip Intel 6 Series also called Cougar Point. Intel had also said that fixing the problem would slash its revenues by USD 300 million in the first quarter."Intel has started manufacturing a new version of this support chip. Intel now expects to begin shipping the new parts in mid-February," it said in a statement.

Moreover, the firm noted that it would resume shipments of Cougar Point chip set for use only in personal computer system configurations that are not impacted by design issue.

"Only computer makers who are committed to shipping the Intel 6 series chip set in PC system configurations that are not impacted by the design issue will be receiving these shipments," the company noted.

According to Intel, this decision came after extensive discussions with computer makers, since the chip with design flaw could impact certain PC system configurations.

On January 31, Intel had made an announcement about the design flaw in Cougar Point.

"For the first quarter of 2011, Intel expects this issue to reduce revenue by approximately USD 300 million as the company discontinues production of current version of chip set and begins manufacturing the new version," it had said.

As per Intel, in some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chip sets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives.
