Washington: Tech giant Apple is set to unveil a new version of its hugely successful iPad in March. The iPad 2 will be thinner than its predecessor and feature an improved display.
Analysts expect the new version will have a front-facing camera and Face time video chat support, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. It will be powered by one of Qualcomm's multimode chips and will run on both GSM and CDMA-based networks around the world.
Apple said it had sold nearly 15 million iPads, since it went on sale last spring.
This is a very big deal, although Apple will be facing increased competition with the launch of a passel of tablets coming from numerous manufacturers, most of which are using the Honeycomb version of Google's Android mobile operating system, the Journal said.

Bangalore: Intel demonstrated Operating System Meego on a tablet device at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
Meego was formed as a result of merger of the Nokia and Intel's Linux-based platforms Maemo and Moblin. However, Stephen Elop, CEO, Nokia has earlier announced that they have shifted their primary focus from MeeGo to Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.The OS, according to Darren Wilson, MeeGo Design Manager, makes it easier for users to go to applications. Here, the user has to touch a video or a picture for few seconds and the menu appears instantly, providing the users with various options. This is different from other OS where the users have to go to applications to find the options they are looking for. By putting information on the users' homepage, Meego will make information easily accessible.
Intel is expected to bring the tablet running on Meego by this year which will be followed by several smartphones. The exact date of the launch of these devices is still unknown. BERLIN, GERMANY: Many web surfers don't know it, but the introduction of new internet address standards might change the way they get online.
Since the supply of usable addresses governed by the IPv4 standard (internet protocol, version 4) has been exhausted, IPv6 has now been introduced. This will allow a previously impossible variety of addresses, says Christoph Meinel, a professor at Germany's Hasso Plattner Institute.
But what does this change mean for everyday surfers? Here's an overview.
Why are IP addresses necessary?
In order for internet-capable devices to share information, they need a unique machine-readable address. These addresses are assigned based on a standard of internet protocols.
But, since humans have a hard time remembering these strings of numbers, websites are also labelled with domain names, like www.google.com. When these addresses are typed into browsers, special servers translate them into IP addresses for the benefit of the computers.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
Until now, IP addresses have been assigned in blocks of four numbers with up to three numerals each: 217.79.215.248, for example. The new IPv6 standard won't convert the numbers into the decimal system, rather a hexadecimal system, recognized by its combination of numbers and letters.
The new standard can be recognized by its eight blocks, separated by colons - 2001:db8:0:0:0:0:1428:57ab, for example.
Will my computer be able to process the new standard?
In most cases, yes. But an IPv6-capable operating system is a prerequisite. Those can be found in any Windows system post Vista. There are ways to install the functionality into Windows XP systems. Mac systems starting at 10.2 and Linux, in general, can support IPv6.
Will my DSL access support the new standard?
In most cases, no. Contemporary routers, like the ones provided by telecommunications companies when DSL packages are ordered, are still set for the old IPv4 standard. In some cases, IPv6 can be added with a firmware update. When purchasing a new router, make sure it supports IPv6.
Should I anticipate problems during the transition to the new standard?
Generally, no. Internet use shouldn't be affected after the switch - at least that's what providers are promising. Those providers have modified their network so that data packets reach all users whether they are using IPv4 or IPv6 standards, a method called dual-stack application. Alternatively, software solutions, like those based on tunnel technology, can be used.
Bangalore: NVIDIA officially announced first quad-core mobile processor, Kal-EI. Also termed as Tegra 3, the chip has two extra processor cores along with 12-core graphic engine. This will help in getting better resolution in mobiles.

The production of the chips is likely to begin by August. Though, NVIDA has announced its customers, it might choose tablet designers such as LG and Samsung. Tegra line can make its way to PC notebooks too.

About 36 hours of videos are uploaded every minute on YouTube, the video—sharing website owned by global search giant Google Inc.
A top official of Google India told reporters here Wednesday that tens of hundreds of Indian movies from the classics of 1960s to the latest ones were available on YouTube.
The website is working actively to bring Hindi movies online, said Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India.
Salman Khan starrer “Dabaang” was the latest full-length Hindi movie made available on YouTube. Millions in India watched it for free.
Goel said many movie houses were bringing their films online. Several soap operas on various television channels are also available on YouTube.
Last year, 55 million people across the world watched Indian Premier League cricket live on YouTube, he said, pointing out the volume of information available online in various media formats.
“The amount of information being created on daily basis is mind-boggling. Last year, we created 800,000 of petabytes of data. One petabyte is a million gigabytes. You need 75 billion iPads required to store this data,” he said.
According to him, 100 billion non-spam e-mails and IMs (instant messages) are sent every day and 500 million people users visit various social sites.

Britain may either rent or buy high-speed bullet trains manufactured by a Chinese firm, an official said.
The high-speed bullet trains are produced by the CSR Corporation, China Daily Thursday quoted the 21st Century Business Herald as reporting.
Gao Hucheng, China’s international trade representative, said British Prime Minister David Cameron has showed willingness to cooperate with China in Britain’s infrastructure construction and high-speed railway construction.
The media report said that CSR will lend a batch of train equipment to Britain for their high-speed railway reconstruction. Thereafter, a joint venture may be established when the cooperation is further strengthened.
This is the first time that China’s high-speed rail technology will enter the British market.
Britain plans to develop high-speed railways in the country over the next 15 years and promote high-speed bullet trains with a highest speed of 362 kph, the daily said.
China last year produced a high-speed train that set a world speed record during a trial run.
The train hit a maximum speed of 416.6 km per hour on its journey between Shanghai and Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province.
The train is designed to run at a speed of 350 km per hour on the 202-km-long track between the two cities. A one-way journey previously took two hours. But the new train would lessen that to around 40 minutes.

Washington: University of Florida's supercomputer Novo-G is the world's fastest reconfigurable supercomputer and outperforms the Chinese supercomputer touted as the world's most powerful.
Novo-G is about the size of two home refrigerators and consumes less than 8,000 watts, unlike conventional supercomputers that can consume up to millions of watts of electrical power, generating massive amounts of heat. In November, the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers, for the first time ever, listed the Chinese Tianhe-1A system at the National Computer Centre in Tainjin in China as Number 1.
"Novo-G is believed to be the most powerful reconfigurable machine on the planet and, for some applications, it is the most powerful computer of any kind on the planet," said Alan George, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Florida University.
Reconfigurable computing is an innovative form of computing, whose architecture can adapt to match the unique needs of each application, leading to much faster speed and less wasted energy, the journal IEEE Computing in Science and Engineering reports.
The TOP500 list ranks supercomputers by their performance on a few basic routines in linear algebra using 64-bit, floating-point arithmetic, said George, according to a Florida University statement.
However, a significant number of the most important applications in the world do not adhere to that standard. Most of the world's computers, from smart-phones to laptops to Tianhe-1A, feature microprocessors with fixed-logic hardware structures.
All software applications for these systems must conform to these fixed structures, which can lead to a significant loss in speed and increase in energy consumption.
Later this year, researchers will double the reconfigurable capacity of Novo-G, an upgrade only requiring a modest increase in size, power, and cooling, unlike upgrades with conventional supercomputers.

BARCELONA, SPAIN: Nokia's CEO on Sunday touted its recent alliance with Microsoft, saying it would be worth billions to the Finnish cellphone maker, which is seeking to catch up in the fiercely competitive smartphone market.
Nokia announced on Friday that it was teaming up with Microsoft to take on Google and Apple in the smartphone market.
"Microsoft is contributing to Nokia substantial monetary value," Stephen Elop said on Sunday in a presentation ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
"Some people interpret that to be in the millions or tens of millions," said Elop, who left Microsoft to take the helm of Nokia in September.

New York: The latest to join the digital newsstand bandwagon is Yahoo. The company forays into the digital publishing business with its service called Livestand for tablet PCs and smartphones. The content for the platform will be pooled in from Yahoo's online publications and sites and from external publishers.
The application will at first be available in iPad and tablets running on Android platform during the first half of the year. Expect the smartphone version later in the year. With Livestand, Yahoo will be in direct competition with News Corp's The Daily that has been launched in collaboration with Apple as an iPad only newspaper. Yahoo has designed Livestand exclusively for portable devices and hence the content will be optimized to fit in the screens and UIs of these devices. Users can customize their news from the various feeds that the company will offer. The source for the content will be drawn from Yahoo's sports, finance and celebrity gossip news. Publishers will get revenue from two channels: advertising and subscriptions. Yahoo! is hoping that newspapers suffering from declining real-world circulation will use Livestand to ramp-up digital distribution and online advertising opportunities.

New Delhi: The year 2010 saw major reshuffle in the positions held by the mobile device manufacturers in the top 10 bracket. As per latest Gartner findings, Nokia, Samsung and LG were the top three manufacturers of 2010. Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple displaced Sony Ericsson and Motorola for the fourth and fifth positions.Even as Nokia and LG are comfortably placed in first and third place, the companies witnessed their market share erode in the year as compared to previous years. The downward spiral for these companies saw them under increasing pressure to refine their smartphone strategies.
Apple and RIM saw strong smartphone sales in the last quarter of 2010 which buoyed them to the top spots. Others who rounded off the top 10 include ZTE, HTC and Huawei.
A total of 1.6 billion mobile phone units were shipped in 2010 to end users. This was a 31.8 percent increase from 2009. The smartphones' category also saw an enormous 72.1 percent increase in 2010 as compared to the previous year. Smartphones accounted for 19 percent of total mobile communications device sales in 2010.
In the smartphone operating system (OS) market, Symbian ruled the roost overall but saw a steep decline in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 32.6 percent or 32.6 million units. This paved way for Android to grow, which overtook Nokia's Symbian unit sales during the fourth quarter of 2010.
The year ended with Symbian, Android and RIM OS enjoying the top three spots in the OS market followed by Apple's iOS and Microsoft Windows.

Bangalore:Adobe Systems, web media browser plug-in, proceeds for security updates of several vulnerabilities which include 29 in PDF viewing software Reader X, Acrobat and 13 in Flash Player.
Flash Player vulnerability includes memory corruption or denial of service errors that could be exploited by an attacker to gain access to a machine and execution of code. Reader X had vulnerabilities that could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. The risk for Adobe Reader X users is significantly lower, because none of the security issues patched in this update can bypass this new capability, which forces operations that display PDF files to the user to be run inside a confined environment, known as a 'sandbox' in which certain functions are prohibited, says Adobe.
The update affects Adobe Reader X running on Windows and Macintosh, Adobe Reader 9.4.1 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat X and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh.
Several flaws were reported through VeriSign's iDefense Labs, including one flaw, which was among others that could be used in drive-by attacks. An attacker can inject unknown code in a web page to defer the error and gain the same benefits as the user.
Along with these updates Adobe also issued updates of about five flaws affecting ColdFusion, a web application development platform and 21 flaws in Shockwave Player that allows users to have quality web content available to be viewed.

At Microsoft's Mix 'n Mash event yesterday on the company's Redmond campus, the subject of the next version of IE was broached. Bill Gates confirmed that the next major release of the company's web browser would be named, simply, Internet Explorer 8. This ended months of guesswork across the blogosphere as to what clever moniker would accompany the big blue E this time around. Unfortunately, the name is just about all Microsoft's big cheese unveiled.
