Bangalore: Amazon is bringing new features to the Kindle and Kindle 3G with the software updates. The changes that the software will bring include real page numbers, public notes and new spread-out for magazines and newspapers.
Amazon customers have for long been asking to the online book seller to match the page numbers in print to the page numbers in the e-book readers. This is for ease of reference or to cite passages. Now Amazon has gone ahead and fulfilled its customers' demand. The company in a blog post said, "Rather than add page numbers that don't correspond to print books, which is how page numbers have been added to e-books in the past, we're adding real page numbers that correspond directly to a book's print edition." It plans to bring the 'Real Page Numbers' feature to its free "Buy Once, Read Everywhere" Kindle apps in months to come, revealed the blog post.
Amazon said that real page numbers have been already added several Kindle books that include the top 100 best selling books in the Kindle Store.
The Public Notes feature allows the users of Kindle to have their notes and highlights up on the Web and share it so that others can see. "Any Kindle user - including authors, their fans, book reviewers, professors and passionate readers everywhere - can opt-in to share their thoughts on book passages and ideas with friends, family members, colleagues, and the greater Kindle community of people who love to read," said a company statement.
You can access the feature on the Amazon website, where you can follow others' reading, see popular highlights and view your full library.
Amazon has revealed a 'new and improved' layout for magazines and newspapers. With the new spread, you can quickly glance through the snapshots of all the news and decide your priority of reading them.
There is also a "Before You Go" feature that has been added. With this, once you end reading the book, you are given the option to rate the book, share a message about the book on a social network, get to know of other books by the same author or even get recommendations on what to read next.
The above listed features are not available for Kindle 1 and 2 or Kindle DX but only Kindle 3G and latest generation Kindle. You can either manually download the software update from Amazon website or have it sent to the devices through Wi-Fi, when available.
